Abstract
This study examined the effect of information and communication technology (ICT) use on working-from-home employees’ internal communication satisfaction and engagement level during the COVID-19 pandemic. The moderating role of individuals’ affiliative tendency was also explored. Results of an online survey with a representative sample of U.S. full-time working-from-home employees after the pandemic suggested that formal use of ICT for work—e-mail, video-conferencing, instant messaging, and phone—was positively associated with employees’ informational and relational satisfaction, which in turn, enhanced their engagement. Informal use of ICT was also positively related to employees’ relational satisfaction and such an effect was particularly salient for employees high in affiliative tendency. Theoretical and practical implications for effective internal communication and ICT use are discussed

۱.Introduction
Given the COVID-19 pandemic, remote working has become the “new norm” in the workplace. Many organizations are now asked to adapt to new changes and encourage employees who work from home to stay engaged (Larson, Vroman, & Makarius, 2020). With limited face-to-face interactions with others, employees working from home after the COVID-19 predominantly rely on computer-mediated communication channels. These new information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as e-mail, video-conferencing, instant messaging, and telephone, help them complete daily job tasks and communicate with coworkers while working remotely (Sias, Pedersen, Gallagher, & Kopaneva, 2012; Smith, Patmos, & Pitts, 2018). Given that they are expected to use this communication technology for formal and informal matters increasingly, effective management of ICT use becomes critical for strategic internal communication and employee engagement.
۶.Limitations and future studies
This study has several limitations that need to be addressed in future research. First, this study measured the frequency of ICT use (Chesley, 2010) and did not consider the quality of information exchange while using such technologies. The distinct effects of each technology were also not examined. Thus, future studies may examine employees’ satisfaction levels with the way organizations communicate through each communication channel to understand the effects of quantity and quality communication with technologies simultaneously. Second, this study’s data were collected during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, when employees began to work from home. Individuals may have gotten used to the “new norm” and work-from-home environment and feel comfortable using these ICTs. Repetitive studies are thus needed through various research methods, such as a longitudinal design, to understand the changes in employees’ ICT use. Third, the study participants were from the United States, majority White and tended to be highly educated workers. As the minority groups were underrepresented in this study, ICT use and its impact on employee engagement in different race/ethnicity and social status could be a key direction for future research. Finally, as an extension of the current study, future research could examine a causal relationship between employees’ formal and informal ICT use. For example, investigating whether infrequent formal ICT use leads to more informal use of ICT among employees to share necessary information or build connections with others will enrich our understanding of ICT use and its effects in a remote working environment…
