Abstract
This study proposes a TOPSIS-based method for multicriteria ordinal classification based on decision examples, named PDTOPSIS-Sort-C. First, reference alternatives describe the expectations concerning a set of ordered classes. Then, characteristic profiles and weights are inferred by a mathematical programming model. This preference learning process reduces the need for the cognitive effort present in the recent TOPSIS-Sort-C method. Furthermore, this method joins the recent PDTOPSIS-Sort that infers boundary profiles to TOPSIS-Sort-B. Finally, a numerical application with simulated choices of reference alternatives is presented to assign 180 countries to degrees of economic freedom for four years.

۱.Introduction
Preference learning has become critical in multicriteria decisionmaking/ aiding (MCDM/A) (Greco & Kadzi´nski, 2018). The use of preference disaggregation techniques (Doumpos & Zopounidis, 2019; Jacquet-Lagr`eze & Siskos, 2001), which incorporate features of mathematical programming and artificial intelligence to make systems learn from decision examples, is present in several variations of MCDM/A methods (Greco et al., 2016). Preference learning techniques are required mainly when the decision-maker (DM) cannot consistently provide the parameters of a method. In these situations, the DM may not be available, or he/she may not be willing to answer the essential questions concerning the parameters’ establishment (Doumpos & Zopounidis, 2002). In addition, there are situations where it may be unrealistic to assume the DM can provide the necessary parameters (Mousseau & Slowinski, 1998). Preferences may also be elicited using indirect elicitation protocols, as described in de Almeida-Filho, de Almeida & Costa (2017) and Lolli et al. (2022), for example. ۵.Conclusion
In MCDM/A solving process, the DM needs to learn about his/her preferences regarding the problem, which are initially vague in his/her mind (Greco & Kadzi´nski, 2018). Also, to provide a good and clear recommendation, the method must learn about the DM’s preferences (Greco & Kadzi´nski, 2018). The learning process of MCDM/A methods and algorithms has been discussed in several papers, and advances and adaptations of popular methods from different MCDM/A paradigms are constantly proposed.
