Abstract
Numerous research studies emphasized the importance of innovation in competitiveness and economic growth. Using a sample of manufacturing-focused firms in India incorporated between the years 2004–۲۰۱۱ and following them for a period of five years post-incubation, we study the effect of innovation on the size transition of firms (i.e., the transition of firms from one size to another). We define the size of a firm by its annual sales turnover. The empirical analysis indicates that the impact of innovation on firm transition is conditional upon the firm size and the ownership structure of firms. The effect of innovation on firm transition varies with firm size. Further, the firms affiliated to a business group have a positive relationship indicating higher probability of transition. The novelty of this paper lies in a suggested conceptual framework based on the linkage between innovation activities and competitiveness signifying the structured approach towards firm transition. This study has significant implications for industrial policy in developing countries.

Introduction
The importance of innovation for competitiveness and economic growth has been emphasized in numerous research studies. The concept of competitiveness is indeed a complex one and is closely related with different aspects (Ambastha & Momaya, 2004; Bhawsar & Chattopadhyay, 2015; Castellacci, 2008). Besides, competitiveness can be looked at three levels: country, industry, and firm-level (Sonar et al., 2020). However, Porter, (1998) said that “it is the firms, not the nations that compete in the market”. Therefore, many of the firms measure their financial performance on firm competitiveness rather than the country or industry level. Innovation is considered as one of the primary sources of economic growth because of its effect on increasing firm performance through new technological development (Ahn et al. 2018; Audretsch et al. 2014; Roper & Hewitt-dundas, 2017). At the firm level, innovation is often seen to foster efficient use of resources and thereby creating sustainable competitive advantages leveraging competitive success of the firm. The economic performance and competitiveness of emerging economies are closely related to its innovation status (Terzić, ۲۰۱۷). Conclusion
The paper studies the role of innovation on firm transition in the Indian manufacturing sector. It is seen that most smaller size enterprises in developing countries never grow beyond a particular size. Therefore, the need for firm transition has been an area of concern considering its impact on the industrial dynamism and overall economic development of the country.
