Abstract

Mass producing items using three-dimensional (3D) printing is challenging. This study exploits this technology for mass production by developing an agile and ubiquitous additive manufacturing system based on 3D printing. The proposed system receives an order and then distributes the order among multiple 3D printing facilities to minimize the makespan (i.e., cycle time). A decision-making model was also constructed for distributing the order to multiple 3D printing facilities to minimize the makespan, and an algorithm was developed to solve the model. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was evaluated through an experiment. The experimental results showed that the proposed methodology reduced the cycle time by 54 min on average. Additionally, it could also distribute orders and balance the workloads of multiple 3D printing facilities. The proposed system is an industrial Internet of things–based technology that coordinates multiple distributed 3D printing facilities via the Internet. Its application to the mass production of 3D-printed items is efficient and economical.

Introduction

Previously, three-dimensional (3D) printing has mostly been applied to research and development, such as in prototyping. Consequently, an item would be printed once, and considerable differences would be evident among the printed items [8], [13]. However, several cases have demonstrated that 3D printing can be applied to mass production [5], [18], [21]. Compared with conventional mass production methods, 3D printing saves time, money, and effort in building the dedicated capacity, acquiring the dedicated materials, prototyping, and molding, but it may take longer to print individual pieces [16], [23]. Overall, 3D printing remains more efficient and cheaper than conventional mass production methods [16]. However, limited printable items and possibly inferior product quality are two drawbacks of 3D printing. Nevertheless, some studies (e.g., [15]) have predicted that mass production using 3D printing is likely to lead to the fragmentation of traditional supply chains and the transfer of profits.

Additionally, conventional mass production methods require the bulk of the dedicated capacity to be accumulated in advance. However, in 3D printing, the 3D model of a product, in either STL or OBJ file format, is transmitted online to the printing location. Thus, the required capacity can be distributed among different locations [22]. The capacities of factories located elsewhere can be utilized via the Internet. Thus, only a small capacity need be maintained at each location. Moreover, because the required initial investment is also smaller, factories are less susceptible to the negative effects of a drop in demand [19].
