Abstract

China faces the challenge of promoting high-tech industries and concomitantly reduces ecological footprints. This research analyzes the directional spillover impacts and connectedness for financial and trade globalization, high-tech industries, and environmental footprints of China. The authors used the data of financial globalization, trade globalization, economic complexity, middle and high-tech industrial contribution, and ecological footprint of China throughout 1996Q1 to 2019Q4. The empirics contribute to the debate on the impacts of the high technology industry, financial globalization for the environmental sustainably in the era of the digital economy. The study finds positive spillover effects from financial globalization (FGI), and economic complexity towards ecological footprints. Further, the high technology industrial contribution has a less significant impact on reducing environmental footprints. Overall, the findings are robust to the presence of structural change effects and the cleaner production objectives for China’s case. Concomitantly, the empirical findings allow us to report innovative conclusions and implications regarding the sustainable development goals (SDG-7, 10), high-industry, and environmental sustainability in China.

۱.Introduction

 ۱.۱.Study background

The paradigm shift and structural changes from emissions-intensive sources to the services and information can reduce the overall environmental externalities in the developed and emerging world. In developed and emerging countries (e.g., China), technological progression, globalization, and enforcement of environmental regulations have significantly reduced energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. However, the mix of aggregate wastage elements has shifted from greenhouse gas emissions (CH4, CO2, NO2, and others) to solid waste and effluents (Nathaniel and Khan, 2020; Shahzad et al., 2021b). Such facts argue that aggregate environmental pollution is still high, and it might need further reforms and policies in line with the certain sustainable development goals (SDG-7: Affordable and clean energy and SDG-8, 10 and 13) (Yu et al., 2019)…

۷.Concluding remarks

Ecological degradation has not been a significant concern of the modern globalization era so far. Few recent studies that include environmental and health aspects mainly focused on air pollution, haze pollution, greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2 emissions and others) and reported ambiguous outcomes. Against this backdrop, the present research attempted to the important research question “whether financial & trade globalization and high-technology industry affect environmental footprints and contribute to sustainable development objectives. To this end, the authors put forward the case of China and used ecological footprint and carbon footprint as the point of concern. According to the primary aim of the study, the researchers use the quarterly data of variables of interest throughout 1996Q1 to 2019Q4. In empirical analysis, the authors employ the vector autoregressive (VAR) model and connectedness methods to investigate the spillover effects and association between economic complexity, globalization, high technology industry, and environmental footprints in China…
