Abstract

Identifying with all humanity is a desirable quality, especially during times of climate change and pandemics. An exploration of human identity remains an under-researched area in tourism studies. This study explores the salience of human identity among visitors in a dark tourism context. Built on self-categorisation theory, this research contributes to the dark tourism literature by highlighting the significance of human identity in the dark tourism context and investigating what underpins the salience of human identity. Data were collected from 196 visitors in situ, across four dark tourism sites of natural disasters, using semi-structured interviews. Although the sites are geographically and culturally different, the study reveals that post natural disaster settings can heighten human identity. The prominence of human identity is underpinned by external stimuli and an understanding of human identity attributes. The results offer valuable and timely insights into the planning and interpretation of post natural disaster sites

۱.Introduction

Climate change, a global pandemic (COVID-19), bushfires and wildfires in Australia and California will see this era remembered as one of unprecedented human crises, making individuals existentially uncertain and ontologically insecure. Perhaps related, scholars recently interrogated tourist experience at Chernobyl, wherein reflections upon human condition in modern society and the underlying existential anxiety were provoked by disaster relics and demonstrations in the authentic setting (Farki´c & Kennell, 2021). One response to such existential circumstances is to draw closer to social groups and reaffirm one’s self-identity so as to reduce existential anxiety and insecurity (Kinnvall, 2004). The belief of “All humanel (Turner, Hogg, Oakes, Reicher, & Wetherell, 1987). Cultivating identification with all humanity has been an area of research interest in recent years (Hamer et al., 2021). Elevating overarching identities such as the human identity as a way of coordinating efforts to manage threats seems to be a priority for politicians, leaders, and researchers (Bavel et al., 2020)…

۵.۱.Theoretical implications

This research makes three theoretical contributions to the literature. First, SCT, ity is one undivided and indivisible family” (Mahatma Gandhi) is recognised in the trying time (Reese et al., 2020). An awareness of human identity denotes a contextual change in one’s self-concept from being a unique individual to being part of all humanity or human beings collectively. This is a process of depersonalisation occurring at the superordinate levwith its elaboration on the levels of inclusiveness of social identity and the salience of social identity, proved to be well suited for explaining visitors’ feelings of human identity in a dark tourism context. Previous research on the theory has been limited to political, organisational and health areas (e.g., Beauchamp et al., 2018; Rouzi & Wang, 2021; Subaˇsi´c, Reynolds, & Turner, 2008). The current research enriches the scope of SCT as a potential framework for interpreting the salience of social identities in the tourism context. Particularly, drawing on 196 interviews, this study provides empirical data that supports the conceptualisation of the salience of human identity at dark tourism sites of natural disasters. A conceptual framework depicting the factors contributing to a sense of human identity was developed (Fig. 1). It was concluded that the prominence of human identity might be underpinned by external stimuli and an awareness of the attributes of human beings…
